“Our fingerprints don’t fade from the lives we’ve touched.” – Tyler Hawkins (Robert Pattinson) – Remember Me (2010)
Zig Ziglar famously said “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.”
As sales professionals helping people is what we do.
One of my favourite definitions of selling is this; “Helping customers to make great buying decisions!”
My own company’s mission statement has it written in stone;
“Helping those involved in the sales process to become more effective, more productive and as a result more successful and happier at what they do.”
Let’s stick with that last word – HAPPIER.
Remember the first half of that Zig Ziglar quote “YOU can have everything YOU want in life!”
I don’t want to depress you here, but there is an extremely slim chance that – when we all pop our clogs and get carried ornately into our chosen chapel of rest – the pews will be jam packed with old and existing customers.
If you truly are exceptional, it might happen – actually, I witnessed it just this week with a gentleman I worked for, a force of nature who changed an industry – but it’s rare.
You see, if you serve customers correctly and give them what they need, well – they sort of expected that.
Happy as they are to receive your exceptional service, that’s pretty much what they were hoping – and paying – for.
Rob Parsons in his fabulous book ‘The Heart of Success’ wrote;
“I worked out the number of days in the first eighteen years of my children’s lives – 6,575. If your child is ten years old you have 2,922 left”
He also gives a great analogy for the day you leave a company – you know; that business that can’t operate without you.
He says “if you stick your head in a bucket of water and take it out again, the imprint you leave will be how much they’ll miss you!”
And he’s right – it may seem like life and death now, but as soon as you pick up your carriage clock, they’ll just change the name tag on the door.
Of course we can’t take our eye of the ball – there are customers to look after and they have to be our priority during our working hours, not to mention the company share holders who we answer to – it is why we are here.
So how do we get that balance right?
Well, you’ll be please to know I have a download sheet for you to print off, so take 5 minutes and circle where you think you’re currently up to.
As with all things, before you start to make any level of change you have to know where you are.
You can use this chart to;
- Focus on what areas of your life need immediate attention
- Keep track of your improvements on a monthly basis
- Make sure the way you’re living is in line with your goals
To make this work for you, you’ll have to be completely honest. Run through each of the ten sections (giving yourself around 30 seconds for each) scoring 1 (for not happy) to 10 (how could this get any better).
Trust me, print this off, fill it in, find out where there’s a little room for improvement and go to work on them for the next 30 days.
If you do, you’ll find that long lasting happiness isn’t found in extremes but in balance – and possibly more importantly, the lives we touch along the way.
See you for next week’s movie quotes
