“When you do the things you love, the money will find you” – Troy Gable (Colin Hanks) – The Great Buck Howard (2008)
1. You volunteer to go to work
Start recognising that you choose to go to work every day – you volunteer to be there.
I’m told that Disney believe everyone has a right to be happy at work – if working for Disney doesn’t achieve that, they recommend you “Find your happiness elsewhere!”
2. You’re going to spend more than half of your waking life doing it
(So enjoy it!)
A career spanning 44 years multiplied by 40 hour weeks (excluding holidays) equates to at least 80,000 hours.
The average human life expectancy in developed countries is 78 years, which means that you’re going to sleep for about 205,000 hours.
Everything else is done in the 100 weeks remaining.
3. “The more you chase money, the harder it is to catch it.” – Mike Tatum
Dogs can smell fear, prospects and money can smell desperation.
Relax into your role and learn to be great at what you do.
You will become successful through your skill and ability to deliver value to others – and you’ll soon realise that only dreamers think they can skip the skill and ability bit.
4. Don’t do what you love, be who you are
This is an idea I discovered while researching this week’s article and I thought it a little more realistic than pretending that we all love just one thing in life and should therefore choose it as a career.
Career decisions don’t always have to be about “what do I love most?”
Career decisions are about what kind of life do I want to set up for myself.
Your view of the world is created from the place you currently find yourself looking out from – next week that position may have changed.
You don’t have to limit yourself at any point in your life by saying “I love this and so will do it every day until the end of time!”
So here’s some practical advice; Instead of just chasing what you love; recognise what you are.
Take a quick version of the Myers-Briggs test, there’s a free one here.
After you’ve finished it’ll give you a list of your strengths and a list of jobs where you are most likely to succeed (click on the choices after you finish).
5. Try a little gratitude
If you still haven’t found what you’re looking for, try this short film from the genius that is Zig Ziglar – and maybe you’ll discover that you’re already where you’re meant to be.
Go and be happy at being successful – in my experience, all the truly successful people I’ve ever met are absolutely over the moon.
See you for next week’s movie quotes
